Biolex® MB40

The inner protective shield

Biolex® MB40 is characterised by a number of different mechanisms of action, for example the prebiotic effect, binding and displacement of certain pathogens and mycotoxins and general improvement of gut health.

Biolex® MB40 consists of cell walls of brewers’ yeast (100% Saccharomyces cerevisiae), obtained by centrifugation after biotechnological disruption of yeast cells. During this process, mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) and beta-glucans accumulate and specifically active segments of the cell wall are released.

Leiber® Beta-S products with highly pure beta-1,3-1,6-glucan molecules from the cell wall of brewers’ yeast (100% Saccharomyces cerevisiae) increase the immune competence of animals, thus supporting their natural defences. A particularly gentle process developed by Leiber detaches the beta-glucans from the cell wall complex of brewers’ yeast. In this way, the native structure of the molecules and thus their biological activity is retained much better than in conventional methods. The beta-glucans are recognised by immune cells in intestinal tissue by means of specific receptors, which induce a broad immune response via signal cascades without triggering disease symptoms. Presentation of the main mechanisms of action of Leiber® Beta-S

  1. Uptake of ß-glucans from the gut lumen via M cells and phagocytosis by macrophages (or also via dendritic cells)
  2. Activation of macrophages increases phagocytosis and the release of reactive oxygen and nitrogen radicals (oxidative burst), antimicrobial peptides and lysozyme  increased combat of pathogens
  3. Release of cytokines and chemokines recruits more immune cells. Macrophages present antigenic structures to T and B cells, causing B cells to subsequently produce antibodies
  4. Activated macrophages migrate to organs of the immune system where they break down the ß-glucans into smaller fragments
  5. In the organs of the immune system (bone marrow, spleen and lymph nodes), these ß-glucan fragments and cytokines are released, activating other immune cells such as granulocytes and NK and T cells

Using a particularly gentle process developed by Leiber, the soluble cell interior (yeast extracts) is released and detached from its natural yeast cell wall connection. Only in this way can the individual components exert their effect. In addition, this enriches the relative content of valuable nutrients and active substances in the cell interior (proteins, amino acids, nucleotides, vitamins, minerals and trace elements). In particular, the water solubility of the extracts in combination with the high levels of free amino acids and nucleotides increases attractiveness and palatability, thus increasing feed intake.

Worldwide, the number of species produced is estimated to be over 600, with around 90% of the produced amount of fish and crustaceans (especially shrimp) being accounted for by 27 or 6 species.
